How to Propagate Succulents: Step-by-Step Guide

It is always enjoyable to be able to grow more plants and thus propagating succulents is a good experience. Here is the detailed guide on how to begin with the process.

1. Choose a Healthy Plant

Choose a healthy succulent that you want to propagate. Choose those plants which have fat leaves or stems and which are not attacked by insects or diseases.

2. Take Cuttings

Take a leaf or stem from the parent plant using a clean sharp pair of scissors or a knife. For the propagation using leaves, one should carefully remove a leaf which should include the base of the leaf.

3. Allow Callusing

After that, transfer the cuttings to a dry and warm area for one to two days so that the cut ends form a callus. This is useful in avoiding rot once planted.

4. Plant in Soil

After callusing, transplant the cuttings to a well-draining medium. For leaf cuttings, place them on the surface of the soil.

5. Water Sparingly

Water the soil slightly and put the pot in an area where it will receive filtered light. Water sparingly until roots emerge, which should happen in a week or two at most. Have fun observing your new succulents as they mature!
