Cactus Care 101: Watering, Lighting, and Maintenance Tips

Cacti are among the easiest plants to grow if they are given the right care. Here is a list of the bare minimum that you need if you want to ensure that your cacti are healthy and happy.

Lighting

Cacti need a lot of light; it is recommended that they should be exposed to at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. It is recommended to put them in a southern or western exposure. If natural light is inadequate, then use artificial light in form of grow lights.

Watering

Let it dry out between waterings until the soil feels dry to the touch. Water the plant every 2-3 weeks during the growing season which is spring and summer. During winter, it is advisable to water your plants once a month. The main reason that cactus has problems is overwatering.

Soil

It is recommended that you use a cactus or succulent mix that has good drainage. You can also mix sand or perlite in order to increase the drainage.

Fertilizing

Water your cacti during the growing season and apply a diluted cactus fertilizer to the plants. Do not feed during the winter since growth is at its lowest.

Repotting

Transplant cacti every two to three years in spring. Select a pot only slightly bigger than the current one so that the plant is not overwatered.
